AfriKids Christmas party
Despite it only being November, we got in the festive spirit by holding our Christmas party early! On Tuesday 22nd November our gallery was the cosy venue for our end of year Reception, held primarily to thank everyone involved in making the charity such a huge success over the past year. For all of you who weren’t able to make it down to the gathering we also say a thank you for your valued support.
Aside from scintillating company, tasty choccie, free flowing wine and African rhythms (which were actually drowned out by the buzzing atmosphere) the entertainment for the evening was the climax of the night. Nii Parkes, a young Ghanaian poet, performed three of his own poems and fed us through words a wonderful image and sense of Ghanaian life which made us all want to jump on the next plane out there! Nii may well have also been responsible for the vast amount of money we raised on the night. His second poem, he warned, had been known to hold a mystical power! Nii went on to say that he could not be held responsible if people found themselves unable to hold back from giving donations … sure enough donations rolled in and we raised in the region of £10,000 – something we had not expected in our wildest dreams!
The donations are all being channelled in to Laadi’s foster home. Already built, the home needed to be furnished before Laadi and the children moved in – we can now furnish every room and the entire family will spend their first Christmas in the luxury of their own beds!
In addition everyone stocked up on Christmas cards and bought a few gifts for family and friends to put round the tree – bracelets, hand woven Bolga baskets and of course Paul’s magical art work. A huge thank you to Nii for providing us all with a nice warm glow and a smile on our face and also to Divine Chocolate for providing something for the journey home (if you managed to save your bar until then!).
