Pupils make their mark through art

EXPRESS YOURSELF: Councillor Gavin Moore and children from Lewisham Bridge School

THE artistic talent of pupils who helped to create a mural depicting life in Lewisham has gone on display.

Combining art and poetry, Lewisham Street Rhythms has been officially unveiled by Urban Renaissance Partnership chairman Councillor Gavin Moore.

The brightly-coloured work, which features on panels outside the new Lewisham Police Station, in Lewisham High Street, is the result of a competition to celebrate regeneration of the town centre.

Award-winning artist Gary Drostle led a series of workshops with youngsters at Saviours Primary School, Lewisham High Street.

They took photographs of their local areas and used them as a basis to experiment with bright fabric patterns.

Youngsters from Lewisham Bridge Primary School, in Elmira Street, worked with poet Nii Ayikwei Parkes to create the mural's complimentary text.

Cllr Moore said: "The creation of this mural is a great example of how children can express themselves through art and poetry. It will make a positive contribution to the town centre environment."
